Swordsman, also known as Jacques Duquesne, is a Marvel Comics character first appearing in The Avengers #19 (August 1965). He's depicted as a skilled martial artist and swordsman who initially served as a villain, wielding a trick sword capable of projecting energy.

In his early appearances, Swordsman was a member of a traveling circus before being recruited into the Avengers by Hawkeye. His intentions were initially duplicitous, and he betrayed the team to the Mandarin. However, he eventually redeems himself, becoming a genuine member of the Avengers and fighting alongside them against various threats.

Swordsman's relationship with Mantis is a defining aspect of his character. He develops romantic feelings for her and ultimately sacrifices himself to save her from Kang the Conqueror, solidifying his heroic transformation.
